And no, that's not referencing The Fray, it's referencing my American Studies class. Wow. Today was our first "real" class, where we had done reading and turned in an assignment and had a class discussion, and Oh. My. God. We're talking about what exactly American Studies is (and a common definition of it seems to be "the study of trying to come up with a definition for American Studies," interestingly enough),and there are SO many seniors in that class, who all have their majors already and information bases from which they can draw knowledge pertaining to the topic, and the first few minutes of class I just spent feeling very very dumb. I mean, I got through the readings, but they were hard. At least, I thought they were. But the way everybody else was talking, it seemed like that was exactly what they were expecting; they all just got into the discussion (which took me awhile to really start following, sadly) and went with it. I wanted my dictionary to look up some of the words they were using, and not to brag or anything, but for me, that's usually saying something.
But hey, what can ya do? I'm in the class basically because I got closed out of two others when registering at the end of last term (and that's out of three total, folks) and it was the only thing open that fit in my schedule and made any sense at all for me to take. I was mildly worried even as I signed up for it, the course being such a high number (285) in a field with which I had no prior experience, but my advisor seemed to think it was a good idea, and I figured my talents in history would help me out. I dunno about that, but I suppose we'll see. I'll get by, I'm sure. It'll probably just be a lot more work than I'm really eager to do, especially as the weather gets even nicer and the end of the year draws near.
My Spanish class is likewise difficult, but I rather expected that. It's conversation, at which I pretty much suck. I fully expect to improve, however, if not with ease, then at least without too very much overexertion. My grammar, at least, seems to be sticking with me a lot better than it used to, which is heartening.
And rounding out my schedule, there's Intro to Children's Lit. We've only had one class so far, but come on. How can I not like a class where I get to read The Big Orange Splot?
